Kevin stated that “everyone pays” and informed Justin and Doug that they must contribute an additional 10% if Mark was to be included, surprisingly, despite giving up 43% of their business, they agreed to the deal. Mark expressed interest in taking a 10% stake in Kevin’s 33% stake, but refused to pay a portion of the $120,000, he proposed to partner with Tower Paddle Boards and showcase the items on his Amazon exclusives website. Robert Herjavec felt that it would be challenging to market a feature of an established product and suggested that the founders of Human Bobber, Doug and Justin, consider a licensing arrangement as their best option, but he was not interested in investing in the company and decided to opt out of the deal.ĭaymond also felt that the company was too small for him to use his distribution network and also decided not to invest. Lori Greiner felt it was an all-or-nothing investment opportunity, but the company was too small for her and she decided to pull out. Mark believed there may be a synergy with Tower Paddle Boards but felt it would take a lot of work. Kevin was the first Shark to make an offer of $120,000 for 33.3 percent of the company, the entrepreneurs seemed to be considering the offer. Lori Greiner asked about sales thus far, Doug disclosed that total sales in the prior three years had been $63,000, but they claim this is because they were awaiting coast guard accreditation, which they received that year Doug revealed that the Scuttlebutt vest cost $22.80 to make and retailed for $65, while the Bottoms Up vest cost $27.80 to create and retailed for $90, including all additional expenditures. He asked about the cost of production and retail price of the products. Kevin O’Leary was the first shark to ask a question after receiving samples of the product, he was aware that such products are often reasonably priced. They demonstrated the versatility of their product by wearing it and then flipping it into a seat. On Shark Tank Season 9 Episode 5, Justin and Doug, the founders of Human Bobber, pitched their company to the Sharks seeking $120,000 in exchange for a 15% stake in the company, valuing it at $800,000. Each piece is labeled with the initials of one of the colonies, except that the four New England colonies are represented by “N.E.” at the snake’s head. His well-known “Join, or Die” political sketch, first published in Franklin’s Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754, shows a snake cut into eight pieces. The Plan provided that each colony would select members of a Grand Council and the British government would appoint a “president General.” 5 One of the most prominent Plan supporters was Benjamin Franklin. Representatives from the British North American Colonies adopted the Albany Plan of Union on July 10, 1754. 4Īpproximately a century after forming the New England Confederation, the colonies again found the need to confederate due to mutual pressing concerns, including relations with Native Americans and each other and the possibility of a French attack. of the necessity of banding together to resist destruction.” 2 Delegates from Massachusetts, New Plymouth, Connecticut, and New Haven formed the New England Confederation, “a firm and perpetual league of friendship and amity for offense and defense, mutual advice and succor upon all just occasions, both for preserving and propagating the truth and liberties of the Gospel and for their own mutual safety and welfare.” 3 Their union lasted four decades, until James II folded these colonies into the new Dominion of New England in 1684. Faced with the need to defend and maintain security over a large territory - and with little hope of receiving aid from England due to the “sad distractions” of the English Civil War - the New England settlers found themselves “convinced. In 1643, the first American effort to create a political union among the colonies began in Boston. As a consequence, they organized and largely governed their day-to-day lives independently and locally. Early colonists found themselves separated from their sovereign’s authority and protection by a vast ocean and from their fellow colonists by a vast geographic expanse. it may be said that the township was organized before the county, the county before the state, the state before the union.” 1 America’s earliest political associations were forged at a local level. Reflecting on America’s early political development, Alexis de Tocqueville commented that “n America. ![]() ![]() American Federalism: Prerevolutionary Underpinnings This paper briefly outlines how American federalism developed and how it serves as the basic organizing principle of American government. Replaced by the Constitution of 1787, this sturdy document and the government it established have survived the tenuous early days of the Republic, a Civil War, serious economic depressions, America’s involvement in two World Wars, and 227 years of innumerable internal and external challenges. During the hostilities and at the War’s end, the newly formed states recognized that they needed to operate together to function adequately on the new national stage and to enter the world stage.Īmerica’s first attempt to codify federalism - the Articles of Confederation of 1781 - failed. ![]() At the beginning of the Revolutionary War, the thirteen colonies declared themselves to be free and independent states. ![]() The antecedents of American federalism trace to colonial days, when the concept of divided sovereign power began to take shape. In many respects, the story of American government is the story of how that struggle has been resolved. What precisely is American federalism? In their seminal work on federal jurisdiction, Felix Frankfurter and Wilber Katz allude to a “dynamic struggle” between federal and state power, the ebb and flow of competing, sometimes conflicting, spheres of federal and state power and influence. ![]() ![]() Winter and summer temperatures have generally been above average since 1980. For example, the annual average maximum ice coverage during 2003–2013 was less than 43%, compared to the 1962–2013 average of 52%. Ice coverage in the Great Lakes has been declining since the 1970s. The increase in winter temperatures has also reduced lake ice cover. The number of very cold days has been near or below average since 2000, reflecting a winter warming trend (Figure 3). The lack of summer warming is reflected in a below average occurrence of very hot days (Figure 2c) and no overall trend in warm nights (Figure 2d). In 2012, a “killer frost” closely followed an abnormally warm March, resulting in significant damage to fruit crops. Warmer spring temperatures present the additional threat of frost-freeze damage to early-budding fruit trees. Like much of the Midwest, this warming has been concentrated in the winter and spring, while summers have warmed less (Figures 2a and 2b). The hottest year was 2012, with a statewide average temperature of 47.4☏, which is 5☏ above the long-term average. The hottest 5-year period on record was 2000–2004. Since the beginning of the 20th century, temperatures in Wisconsin have risen more than 2☏, and temperatures in the 2000s have been warmer than in any other historical period (Figure 1). Historically unprecedented warming is projected during this century. Observed temperatures are generally within the envelope of model simulations of the historical period (gray shading). Shading indicates the range of annual temperatures from the set of models. Temperatures in Wisconsin (orange line) have risen more than 2☏ since the beginning of the 20th century. Projected changes for 2006–2100 are from global climate models for two possible futures: one in which greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase (higher emissions) and another in which greenhouse gas emissions increase at a slower rate (lower emissions). Annual average temperatures vary from 39☏ in the north to 50☏ in the south.įigure 1: Observed and projected changes (compared to the 1901–1960 average) in near-surface air temperature for Wisconsin. The state has borders along Lake Superior to the north and Lake Michigan to the east, and the proximity to the lakes provides a moderating effect on temperatures for locations along the shorelines. However, periodic intrusions of cooler air from Canada provide breaks from summer heat. The summer is characterized by frequent warm air masses, either hot and dry continental air masses from the arid west and southwest or warm and moist air from the south. The winter season is dominated by dry and cold air, with occasional intrusions of milder air from the west and south. The southern part of the state experiences cold winters and mild to hot summers, while the northern part of the state experiences frigid winters and generally cool summers with brief bouts of excessive heat. Wisconsin’s location in the interior of North America and the lack of mountains to the north and south expose the state to incursions of bitterly cold air masses from the Arctic in the winter and warm, humid air masses from the Gulf of Mexico in the summer, causing a large range of temperatures across the state. ![]() ![]() Whitepages continues to provide a range of useful services, and has an awful lot of data in order to back up its improved online experience and associated apps. For example, if you’re classifying types of cancer in the general population, many cancers are quite rare. K-NN (and Naive Bayes) outperform decision trees when it comes to rare occurrences. On the other hand, Naive Bayes does require training.ĥ. K-NN doesn’t require any training-you just load the dataset and off it runs. In comparison, K-NN doesn’t require that you know anything about the underlying probability distributions.Ĥ. Therefore, unless you know the probabilities and pdfs, use of the ideal Bayes is unrealistic. The algorithm compares all other classifiers against this ideal. ![]() Naive Bayes requires that you known the underlying probability distributions for categories. Naive Bayes will only work if the decision boundary is linear, elliptic, or parabolic. Naive Bayes can suffer from the zero probability problem when a particular attribute’s conditional probability equals zero, Naive Bayes will completely fail to produce a valid prediction. This could be fixed using a Laplacian estimator, but K-NN could end up being the easier choice.Ģ. If having conditional independence will highly negative affect classification, you’ll want to choose K-NN over Naive Bayes. For tasks like robotics and computer vision, Bayes outperforms decision trees. This method is not affected by the curse of dimensionality and l arge feature sets, while K-NN has problems with both.ĥ. In comparison, K-NN only has one option for tuning: the “ k”, or number of neighbors.Ĥ. A hyperparameter is a prior parameter that are tuned on the training set to optimize it. Naive Bayes offers you two hyperparameters to tune for smoothing: alpha and beta. Don’t discount K-NN when it comes to accuracy though as the value of k in K-NN increases, the error rate decreases until it reaches that of the ideal Bayes (for k→∞).ģ. In general, Naive Bayes is highly accurate when applied to big data. In comparison, k-nn is usually slower for large amounts of data, because of the calculations required for each new step in the process. If speed is important, choose Naive Bayes over K-NN.Ģ. Naive Bayes is a linear classifier while K-NN is not It tends to be faster when applied to big data. The math is complex, but the result is a process that’s highly accurate and fast-especially when you’re dealing with Big Data. Finally, you’ll want to dig into Naive Bayes. K-NN comes in a close second Although the math behind it is a little daunting, you can still create a visual of the nearest neighbor process to understand the process. It will give you a clear visual, and it’s ideal to get a grasp on what classification is actually doing. If you’re new to classification, a decision tree is probably your best starting point. Decision trees are easy to use for small amounts of classes. If you’re trying to decide between the three, your best option is to take all three for a test drive on your data, and see which produces the best results. Naive Bayes and K-NN, are both examples of supervised learning (where the data comes already labeled). ![]() That said, three popular classification methods- Decision Trees, k-NN & Naive Bayes-can be tweaked for practically every situation. In general, there isn’t a single “best” option for every situation. A myriad of options exist for classification. Man X Collection Guide feedback Give us feedback! to Bosses. Additionally, Ragdolls traditionally have blue eyes, but when mixed with a Tabby, their eye color can be blue, green, or golden. Usually, their size reflects their Ragdoll side more than the Tabby side. However, their size will also depend on the dominant genes of the mixed breed. If smaller framed cats are bred, the offspring will likely be on the smaller side. Ragdoll kitties are big cats weighing up to 20 pounds, while Tabby Cats are more on the average side, so the mix will primarily depend on the parents’ size. In addition, both parent breeds do well with dogs, so their mix will also get along with dogs. They are very intelligent from the tabby side. They are also good lap cats and make great companions.
